Exeter City Football in the Community and Argyle Community Trust have received a boost to develop Disability Football with a grant from the Wembley National Stadium Trust.
It is great to see the two Football League clubs in Devon joining forces to elevate disability football provision and we both witness the unbridled enthusiasm for the game held by players with disabilities.
Football in the Community Trust’s from across the country have been invited to apply for funding to deliver the English Football League Trusts “Every Player Counts” Programme to develop their Disability Football programmes with success for both League 2 clubs.
Both club’s community departments aim to develop programmes for participants with mental health, deaf and learning disabilities, structuring specific programmes for ladies and children with disabilities. All the community programmes will provide exit routes into Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle’s Ability Counts teams, with newly formed female disability teams at both clubs.
Jamie Vittles (Head of Community at Exeter City Football in the Community) and Mark Lovell (Head of Community at Argyle Community Trust) commented on the great news for their community programmes:
“We are extremely proud of the work already undertaken by Exeter City Football in the Community in promoting and facilitating a range of Disability Football projects,” said Jamie. “The increased funding is fantastic and will allow us to employ a full-time Disability Inclusion Officer who will continue to drive existing projects, as well as provide and support additional opportunities across our region."
Mark Lovell added: “It is a hugely important boost to players with disabilities across our region, opening doors to the beautiful game that enables every corner of society to enjoy football.
“We were delighted with the achievements of our Ability Counts team last season and this funding will provide access for passionate footballers to join a programme that provides clear progression routes for ambitious players in disability football.”
