CITY Community Trust’s Sport Memories Group is proving a continued success with one member, Mike Roach, calling it "the best day of the week."
The group has been running for just under one year and is an opportunity for senior people to get out of their normal environment, come along and discuss some of their sporting memories.
Located at St James Park, the home of Exeter City, the group is run on Wednesday’s from 10am-12pm with opportunities to take part in quizzes as well as receive free refreshments as they reminisce about some of the sporting tales they have encountered throughout their lives, as well as topical sporting subjects.
Mike, who is a regular member of the group, can’t highlight enough the benefits of coming along.
He said: It’s the highlight of the week. I find it immensely humbling, a real privilege, to sit down with a group of people who have got so many unique memories and experiences of what’s happened in their lives.
“At a later stage in my life, to be able to sit down with a group of people, who have such rich experiences is something I never thought I would be involved with.”
Mike also believes that if someone is considering coming along to the group then they shouldn’t hesitate, and everyone will be given a warm welcome.
“Don’t even hesitate about coming, said Mike: “I would be surprised if a newcomer didn’t find it so rewarding and memorable. You will go back over years because conversations trigger memories. Under normal circumstances you may have forgotten that you’d ever done something and by being part of this group you are reminiscing. It’s invaluable.
“It’s people meeting together on Wednesdays, looking forward to the company, looking forward to exchanging memories mainly related to sport. To going around and having a look around the ground as well.”
On September 18, whilst Exeter City take on Newport County, the Sporting Memories Group have also been invited to the ground for match hospitality where they will receive a meal from the football club as well as watch the Grecians from the CITY Community Trust box.
Mike says he and his fellow members are excited to experience watching a match from the box and is thankful for the opportunity that the Sporting Memories Group brings.
He continued: “We’re going to be the guests of the club against Newport County. We are going to have pre-match and half-time hospitality and we’re going to watch the game together. People are really excited about the whole occasion.”
